Thoughts: What's in a Name?

What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;

One of the most famous lines from 'Romeo and Juliet' by William Shakespeare has always been quoted on and off everywhere. These lines show us a very important fact that what matters most is not the outer beauty of a human being but the inner character. So, why does your name and where you come from matters a lot?

A very famous Bollywood movie starts with the line, "My Name is Khan and I’m not a terrorist” shows a very important fact that your name does matter in deciding what people think of you. I was, as a matter of fact was also a minor victim in this case. While at the Delhi Airport when I was leaving for Warsaw, Poland, the guy at the immigration counter checked and rechecked my passport. He even commented about my appearance stating that the photo doesn’t match my face and was checking my face left, right and centre. It did make me a bit uncomfortable as others before him were easily given immigration stamps.

Another incident that struck me was when I was travelling from Warsaw to Berlin via Bus. At the German border, officials entered the bus and checked everyone’s passport. The passports were returned back with just a glance but the officer’s had a look at my passport and went to verify my passport details as well as my visa details. This shows even in today, after 12 years of 9/11, name does matter a lot and not your inner character.

On a lighter note, I had never intended to write such a post in my first attempt. This post was basically meant about the name of my blog which took me more than a month to come up with. Seriously, thinking of a name especially for a blog or an email id is so much more difficult nowadays.

Hope you all liked my first post, I know it’s not much but it was worth a try.

  1. The moment I got to know your name, I googled. Someone whose name has such a beautiful meaning has to be good! I believe in names n their relationship with each other. Nice post!
